Essay on Radio Creating a Shared Culture - 856 Words

When the world was still dominated by a purely oral culture, the term shared culture was not even a possibility. The switch to literate culture and the invention of writing was the gateway to the beginning of a shared culture as it allowed ideas to travel without the boundaries of location that were previously in place. The notion of having a shared culture only further increased with the introduction of the telegraph and telephone as it allowed for not only the sharing of ideas with people over great distances, but it did so in an efficient time frame that made it possible for people to be reading the same stories at the same time. This was the first step in creating a unity as having a shared foundation of knowledge is what brought†¦show more content†¦This was very obvious in the time of the Titanic as radio acted as the line that connected the ship to broadcasters and then broadcasters to the rest of the public. However, in this case the ease of the radio was not as we lcomed. As stated in Communication in History chapter 27, it was incredibly easy for amateur broadcasters to interfere with radio signals and in this case one those people passed along the message that all passengers of the titanic were safe. When the opposite was found to be true everyone was outraged, but it was still a feeling that was shared by the nation and that knowledge united people. As for events that hit closer to home, nothing hit worse than the Great Depression. As stated by Christopher Sterling and John Kittross, when the depression hit Roosevelt began his fireside chat program that was extremely popular with the American public. Radio made these chats seem like the president was having an intimate conversation with each person which helped to boost morale and encouraged unity among the people. The same idea occurred during war time, specifically during the coverage of Munich, when broadcasters created the Roundtable program (Murrow, pg. 44). Further into the war radio was able to inform Americans about the events taking place in Europe and once again enable them to form their own opinions on the matter while still being a part of the larger mass society. Vaccination is the administration of vaccines that are given to the individuals with the help of injections. Vaccines helps children to be safe from harmful diseases. Although there are certain side effects of the vaccines that makes is gaining a lot of criticism. Thesis statement: Vaccines provides immunization to the children and keeps them safe from many harmful diseases like, Tetanus, Measles, Pertusis and Chicken Pox. Vaccination is a method that is used in medical treatment, in this method individuals are given acquired immunity for any particular disease. Vaccination contains an agent that is similar to microorganisms that attacks the human body and causes disease. Vaccines are made from the weak or dead microbe or it can be made from its toxins or the proteins that are on the surface. The immune system of the human being has been given vaccine is stimulated for the identification of the disease causing threat and destroying it. There are two types of vaccines, prophylactic and the other one is therapeutic. Prophylactic vaccines are used for the diseases that might affect the individual in future, it is used against a specific pathogen. Therapeutic vaccines are still being investigated, an example of this can be cancer vaccines. Vaccination is process of administration of vaccines, which was coined from Variolae vaccine, which is small pox of the cow, the term was coined by Edward Jenner who is a famous biologist and the inventor of Vaccines. He used the term in the year 1798 in his work Inquiry into the Variole Vaccine Known as the Cow Pox, where in his findings it can be used against the attack of small pox. It is most commonly used for the immunization of children so that they can be kept safe from many harmful diseases like poliomyelitis, Diptheria, Chicken Pox, tetanus, pertusis, Measles, Hepatitis and many more. As per the reports of World health Organization, there are licensed vaccines for treatment of twenty-five infections. Since they are provide immediate actions and life long immunizations, most of the medical practitioners still use vaccination for immunizing children (Chervenak et al.). Opposing view discussion The reason behind argument against the usage of vaccines is that many children are allergic to certain elements that are present in the vaccines, for children the process of vaccination is quite painful and they fall sick for a day or two. The process of vaccination involves the use of injections, with the help of syringes the vaccine is injected in to the body of the child. There are two methods of injected one is intra-venous and the the other is intra-muscular. For children it being argued that both the methods are not appropriate. In many countries including India now intramuscular injections for polio is not used rather polio drops are being used (Jemal, Ahmedin, et al.). The marks left by the BCG vaccines are prominent for lifetime. The method was prevalent since eighteenth century (Aaby et al.). Australia suspended the flu virus in April 2010 for the children who are below the age of five years (Michael, Charles et al.). Many children after they were given the vaccination were admitted to the hospital with symptoms of febrile convulsions or they get reacted from other vaccines within hours of the vaccination. In UK chicken pox vaccinations are practiced because it causes any health related issues (Chervenak et al.). There may be few instances where the use of vaccination has been adversely affecting the children but the method in most of the cases there are 100 percent success results of vaccination. Except of mild fever there are not much side effects to the vaccines that are given to the infants after their birth. Till now vaccination is the most effective technique for immunization in small children (Chervenak et al.). Conclusion Vaccination is the most commonly technique used by the medical practitioners because it is safe in most of the cases and is quick. It provides lifelong immunization to the children. The reason for the criticism is, it is a very painful technique and few incidents have been reported where the side effects of certain vaccines were major. Nike an Ethical Issue I Essay Example

Nike an Ethical Issue I Paper Nike an Ethical Issue Nike an Ethical Issue Nike is a company that was created on an agreement and a handshake between two men. That handshake between Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight became the foundation of how Nike does business. Integrity and commitment to the highest ethical standards make up the code of business ethics for Nike. A company like Nike that has a code of ethics and a foundation of how business is conducted should not have any problems with ethical issues as far as the way they do business; however there is an ethical issue in regards to Nike. Ethical Issue Nike has been accused of using child labor in the production of their soccer balls. This ethical issue has taken place in Pakistan. There are laws in Pakistan against child labor and slavery, but the Pakistan government does not take the necessary action to stop it. The United States constitution states that child labor is an illegal and inhumane practice and any United States company found guilty practicing and encouraging it will be prosecuted. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the World Trade organization prohibits member nations like the United States, from discriminating against the importation of goods made by children. One of the reasons the practice of using child labor goes on is the fact that these third world countries are in such dire need and these children are helping in the support of their families. Pakistan has a per-capita income of nineteen thousand dollars per year. This equates that a typical person lives off of five dollars a day. Nike does not launch production directly in Pakistan. It is subcontracted through a local firm, which has to abide by Nike’s international rules and regulations when producing its goods. Nike has the duty to monitor the subcontracted firm. Nike an Ethical Issue Nike also has based its operations in Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and India. It seems as if Nike thrives to operate in such countries due to the low cost labor to make its products. Twelve- year-old girls work in Indonesia sweatshops seventy hours a week making Nike shoes in unhealthy plants. There have been many other claims about the mistreatment of workers of sweatshops in other countries in which Nike has subcontracted. Ethical Perceptions across Cultures. The ethical perceptions across the cultures in regards to child labor come from the various sources. The culture for countries such as Pakistan, in which the earnings of one person goes to feeding ten people, it is very difficult for a low income population to survive. With the population in Pakistan being at one million and is an important center for the production of goods for export to international markets. In 1994 exports brought three hundred eighty five million dollars to the economy of Pakistan. Those exports came largely from the use of child labor producing goods. Therefore that culture is somewhat dependent upon those children that work illegally. Looking at the situation from a culture such as the United States, we view it differently. The economy as bad as it may seem it is nothing of that of other countries. The United States is rich in comparison and does not condone such practices. The idea that Nike using child labor open debate as to what is ethically right. Some would say that Nike is doing a great deed for Pakistan. The parents willingly send their children off to work in a factory to help support them so the argument along with that would be to buy more products that the children produce. This would increase their demand and they would produce more. This would allow them to earn more. It is believed this would give them a chance to rise above poverty level and the benefits would not only pay off for the families of the children, but for the nation as well. The argument to increasing the demand of the products made by child labor would be that it encourages child labor. That in turns encourages more birth rates, which creates more slavery, and sweatshops. Education among children will continue to decline. More and more children will be bought and sold on the black market and the problem would never end. Risk and consequences associated. There are many risk and consequences involved with Nike conducting business utilizing child labor around the world. This places a negative impact on Nike and it goes against what is written in the code of conduct for Nike. This could also cause a decrease in sales and a loss in revenue due to the American public opposing this type of practice in business. Conclusion Nike is a business that was built on good values and ethics. Those same values and ethics are in question in regards to the labor they use in third world countries. This labor comes in the form of children. Children are sent to work in these factories by their parents so they can help support them. These children receive very low wages and the working conditions are substandard. There are laws and regulations that govern these practices but they are not strongly enforced. These countries are very poor and the income that Nike brings to these countries drastically improves their economy. The United States constitution states that child labor is an illegal and inhumane practice and any United States company found guilty practicing and encouraging it will be prosecuted. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the World Trade organization prohibits member Nike, an Ethical Issue nations like the United States, from discriminating against the importation of goods made by children. Nike did not directly have these children working in these conditions. They hire subcontracting firms to make their products. Nike is responsible to monitor the subcontracting firms to ensure all business practices are within the rules and regulations set forth. The ethical perception across the cultures varies among the cultures. The third world countries view this as a means of providing for their families and improving the economy of their countries. Others view this act as unethical and criminal. Nike has taken risk in their production of products in which the use of child labor is used. This risk not only cost them their reputation but it prove to be a huge financial loss as well. References Websites www. American. edu/TED/nike. htm www. nikebiz. com
